Barely one week after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in Switzerland, a Twitter friend whose name is Jay has accused him of contributing to the rot in the Nigerian education sector.
Atiku had stated via his Twitter handle, @atiku, that the doctorate degree in Diplomacy and International Relations conferred on him by the Geneva School of Diplomacy and all he achieved today were as a result of the schooling he received, saying “education gave me everything.”
Atiku had posted on Facebook the picture of the conferment of the award, showing him in the academic gown of the institution.
He also posted the speech he presented at the event on the social network.
But Jay, who tweets via @9jaBloke, took on the former number two citizen on Twitter, stating that he failed to give his best to the education sector during his eight-year stay in the Presidency.
Jay said Atiku’s narrative about his growing up and the sacrifices his mum went through when his father was “put in jail by local authorities”, in order for him to get quality education, makes him bewildered.
Jay, who claims to be pursuing a degree in a British university, accused Atiku of choosing to establish a private university – American University of Nigeria, Adamawa State – rather than fixing the rot in education sector while in was in office.
Jay, in a series of 31 tweets to Atiku, said, “Good evening Turakin Adamawa (Atiku). I have been following your tweets for a while and l must say a good number of them have been insightful. The AUN was founded and ironically so, in 2005; two clear years before your tenure as vice-president came to a stormy end.
“The founding of the AUN was premised on your recognition of qualitative education as a leverage for building a veritable future. There’s no gainsaying that during the first term of your stewardship, you were the defacto C-in-C and for obvious reasons.
“Your boss OBJ (Olusegun Obasanjo) had just been released from his incarceration and thus had to grapple with a somewhat alien political landscape.The apparatus of government was firmly under your control and its instrumentality was basically at your whim and caprice.
“How do you begin to justify a situation where two of the best private universities in the country are owned by two people who superintended over the rulership of our dear country for eight years and didn’t change the fortunes of the public education sector?”
Jay states that the development is simply ‘’inconceivable’’, adding that ‘’apart from its inconceivability, it is in any language and in any part of the world unacceptable.’’
Jay, who links the current industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to the eight-year tenure of the Obasanjo/ Atiku administration, adds that the strike is a constant reminder of the hopelessness of a sector that ought not to be.
