About Polymer and Textile Engineering Futo

FUTO's department of Polymer and Textile Engineering is concerned with the Science, Technology and Engineering of materials formed from large molecules. The programme is linked with two primary industries namely, textile and polymer/plastic processing industries. Textile Industries converts fibres into yarns and fabrics which are used for curtains, carpets, fabrics and other furnishings in our homes and in a lot of industrial applications. Polymer based industries produce, such items as plastics, tyres, varnishes, resins, elastomers, printing inks, foams etc. These industries practically deal with the wide and ever expanding range of polymers and man-made fibres firmly based on science and engineering principles.
A five year B. Eng. Degree programme is offered to students. The first year is broadly based on basic sciences including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering Drawing, Workshop practice and General studies. During the second year, the students take more courses in fundamental sciences, engineering, statistics, computing and humanities to enable them grasp with engineering, technological and scientific principles in later studies. The courses in subsequent years cover all aspects of polymer and fibre science and technology, including polymer and fibre chemistry; polymer structureand properties, all aspects of textile technology comprising yarn manufacture, fabric production, dyeing and finishing of textiles; polymer processing and technology; rubber technology; analysis and testing, economics; production and financial management. Some optional courses in various areas of polymer and textile technology are offered particularly in the fifth-year to meet the individual requirements of students and to give the programme acertain degree of specialization. There is one semester long vacation spent on approved individual industrial attachment and training. The B. Eng. Degree emphasizes all the common core-engineering courses which are prescribed by the school of Engineering and Engineering Technology to enable students become COREN Registered. Final yearprojects (PTE 515/516) are tailored to embrace chemical, physical, technology and engineering problems in application, polymer education and practice of Polymer and Fibre based industries in Nigeria in particular
