The profession of urban and regional planning concerns with the planning, designing and managing of the built environment. It is interdisciplinary in nature and integrates both the art and science of creating a better quality of life in a sustainable environment. At the local level the profession deals with the planning and designing of neighborhoods, towns and cities. In contrast, the profession focuses on strategic and structural planning at the regional and national level. The profession seeks to balance between society and environment by managing developments through policies, strategies and plans.

The Urban and Regional Planning programme emphasizes technical, strategic and generic skills demanded of planners. Students are instilled with knowledge on principles of planning, creativity in designing and problem solving, analytical and strategic thinking, as well as competency in research and practice.

Objectives



  1. To provide students with a range of learning experiences in acquiring relevant theories, methodologies, techniques and skills to develop a capacity for creative thinking and problem solving in urban and regional planning.

  2. To inculcate a culture of continual learning and innovation among students for a career in urban and regional planning in a dynamic economic, socio-cultural and environmental situations.

  3. To prepare students for diverse career opportunities in urban and regional planning and related fields at the local and global level.

  4. To instil awareness and sensitivity among students about the roles of urban and regional planning in achieving sustainable development.

  5. To offer quality planning education that fulfils the educational requirements of the Board of Town Planners Nigeria.

To be accepted to study at FUTO, interested applicants must apply through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam (UTME) body having gone through each of the school requirements. below are details for URBAN & REGIONAL PLANING Admission requirements

Direct Entry Requirement

At least three ‘A’ Level credits in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry

At least Upper Credit OND/HND in relevant fields. Candidates must in addition meet the UTME ‘O’ Level requirements.

UTME Requirement

At least five credits at ‘O’ Level in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics plus any other subject taken from Biology, Geography, Economics, Fine Arts, Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

About Building Technology in futo

It has long been recognized and appreciated that the building process requires highly skilled labour to deliver quality product promptly. Hitherto this expectation is yet to be achieved and as a consequence the industry has suffered a number of setbacks – cost and time overrun, abandonment of building projects, building collapse, and premature decay of our environment. Therefore, of necessity, building most be handled by qualified professionals who are adequately and properly trained.

It is therefore my pleasure to welcome all and sundry to this great department, the birthplace of successful construction practitioners. Department of Building, at the moment, offers a five year undergraduate programme in Building Technology leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. In the very near future, however, it is hoped that the undergraduate programme would have to be split and planned to take care of the increased specialization required for effective and increased participation of the various professionals in the construction industry. The specialized areas of study include the following programmes:

(i) Management of Construction Projects

(ii) Building Structures and Construction Technology

(iii) Building Services Engineering

(iv) Building Maintenance

(v) Construction Economics

A Builder could be useful in the following areas of human endeavors: Construction Industry, Educational Institutes, Banks, Finance House, Insurance, Housing Corporation, Military Establishments, Oil Industry, the tree tiers of government and their agencies

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Department of Building Technology at FUTO includes:

  1. To produce graduates who will contribute to the general building policy of the world.

  2. To produce graduates who will proffer solutions to housing and structural developments of the developing nations.

  3. To produce technocrats to proffer solutions in the areas of infrastructural development of the developing nations of the world, which will help ameliorate poverty.

To support the students’ technical ability with appropriate management and moral background information for optimum performance in practice as contract managers, construction project supervisors, site managers/engineers, construction project programmers, building structural designers, building services designers, etc

  2. To produce students who are solution providers to the challenges facing the Building Industry.

  3. To produce students with excellent skills in Project Management as a way to reducing the spate of abandoned projects in Nigeria, Africa and the World.
