Twitter Follower Tackles Atiku Over Rot In Education Sector

Barely one week after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in Switzerland, a Twitter friend whose name is Jay has accused him of contributing to the rot in the Nigerian education sector.

Atiku had stated via his Twitter handle, @atiku, that the doctorate degree in Diplomacy and International Relations conferred on him by the Geneva School of Diplomacy and all he achieved today were as a result of the schooling he received, saying “education gave me everything.”

Atiku had posted on Facebook the picture of the conferment of the award, showing him in the academic gown of the institution.

He also posted the speech he presented at the event on the social network.

But Jay, who tweets via @9jaBloke, took on the former number two citizen on Twitter, stating that he failed to give his best to the education sector during his eight-year stay in the Presidency.

Jay said Atiku’s narrative about his growing up and the sacrifices his mum went through when his father was “put in jail by local authorities”, in order for him to get quality education, makes him bewildered.

Jay, who claims to be pursuing a degree in a British university, accused Atiku of choosing to establish a private university    – American University of Nigeria, Adamawa State – rather than fixing the rot in education sector while in was in office.

Jay, in a series of 31 tweets to Atiku, said, “Good evening Turakin Adamawa (Atiku). I have been following your tweets for a while and l must say a good number of them have been insightful.  The AUN was founded and ironically so, in 2005; two clear years before your tenure as vice-president came to a stormy end.

“The founding of the AUN was premised on your recognition of qualitative education as a leverage for building a veritable future. There’s no gainsaying that during the first term of your stewardship, you were the defacto C-in-C and for obvious reasons.

“Your boss OBJ (Olusegun Obasanjo) had just been released from his incarceration and thus had to grapple with a somewhat alien political landscape. The apparatus of government was firmly under your control and its instrumentality was basically at your whim and caprice.

“How do you begin to justify a situation where two of the best private universities in the country are owned by two people who superintended over the rulership of our dear country for eight years  and didn’t change the fortunes of the public education sector?”

Jay states that the development is simply ‘’inconceivable’’, adding that ‘’apart from its inconceivability, it is in any language and in any part of the world unacceptable.’’

Jay, who links the current industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to the eight-year tenure of the Obasanjo/ Atiku administration, adds that  the strike is a constant reminder of the hopelessness of a sector that ought not to be.

This entry includes a definition of literacy and Census Bureau percentages for the total population, males, and females.

There are no universal definitions and standards of literacy. Unless otherwise specified, all rates are based on the most common definition – the ability to read and write at a specified age (15 and above). Detailing the standards that individual countries use to assess the ability to read and write is beyond the scope of this article.

Information on literacy, while not a perfect measure of educational results, is probably the most easily available and valid for international comparisons. It is impossible to overstate the importance of education especially in Africa. Low levels of literacy, and education in general, can impede the economic development of a country in the current rapidly changing, technology-driven world

Students Appeal ToJonathan To End ASUUStrike

Some students of
Ebonyi State University
(EBSU), Abakaliki, on
Thursday appealed to
President Goodluck
Jonathan to intervene
and stop the ongoing
strike by university
lecturers.
The students said that the
ongoing strike in its 4th
day was not in the interest
of university education
and commended lecturers
in EBSU for not
participating in the strike.
The students, who spoke
include Miss Rebecca
Okoro, a 200 level student
of the Department of
Biotechnology as well as
Enyinnaya Oko and
Stephen Onwe both first
year students of the
Department of Mass
Communication.
They said timely
intervention by Jonathan
would salvage the
situation and appealed to
him to act fast to save the
university system from
collapse.
The students expressed
regret that their colleagues
affected by the strike had
remained at home.
“We commend the
wisdom and decision of
the local ASUU chapter for
not participating in the
ongoing industrial action.
“You know we just
resumed on May 12 for
academic activities after
six weeks closure of the
institution by the
authorities in the wake of
violent protests by
students over fee hike.
“Joining the strike now will
have serious
consequences on the
students of the university.
“We, however, feel for
our colleagues in these
affected universities who
are now wasting in their
respective homes,’’ Okoro
said.
The students said that
their first semester
examination had just
started before the
commencement of the
ASUU strike.
They said that the
industrial action embarked
upon by the ASUU could
distort the smooth
running of the academic
calendar if nothing was
done to end it soon.
The students decried the
alleged lack of
commitment by the
government to the
fulfilment of agreements
with labour unions.
According to Okoro, the
indefinite strike is a
setback to the higher
education sector.
She called for concerted
efforts to end the strike.
“We understand that this
agreement was reached
between ASSU and
Federal Government
representatives since 2009
and one wonders why
government has refused
to implement the terms of
the agreement,” she said.
Onwe said: “We
completely detest the
posturing of government
in the whole issue but we
are appealing to Mr
President to urgently
intervene.
“His timely intervention
will no doubt facilitate
quick resolution of the
impasse in the interest of
Nigerian students,’’ he
said.
Dr Isa Fagge, the National
President of ASSU, had
directed members of the
union to embark on an
indefinite strike over the
non-implementation of
some of the issues
contained in their
agreement with
government in 2009.
He alleged that the
government had reneged
on the Memorandum of
Understanding it signed
with the union in
December 2011. (NAN)
Don't wait until it is too
late.

THE EXAMINATION SYSTEM: WHAT TO AVOID
• Number one thing to avoid in FUTO post-

given less time to tackle much questions.
• In year 2009, futo set 100 questions for
their candidates, meaning 20
questions from each of the 5 subjects for
1hr, without calculator, Then in year 2010,
when students where preparing for another 100 questions, futo came out with
just 50 questions to be answered in 35 mins without calculator. Now you see that
futo can change at any time to eliminate
candidates.  Early Preparation  therefore is the
only way to success with the help of past questions and practice.

Letter to the Students Union Government, FUTO

To the president,
Students Union Government, (SUG), FUTO.
Through Myschoool.com.ng/futo community.

Sir,

Appeal For Refund Of Our money "Erroneously" Collected From Some New Students By The SUG, FUTO

We write through this medium to request for an urgent action to make necessary refund as explain by the subject of this letter.

Your government/representatives collected a sum of N3,000 SUG fees, plus N1,000 for change of teller to receipt from some of the admitted students who did early registration last month.

According to the school fee payment print out (invoice) we got from www.futo.edu.ng, it was obvious that the same N3,000 SUG fees has been included by the university management in our school fees. Thus there was NO NEED for collecting such money from us as you/your representatives did.

We remember very well that you, the SUG president, in your address to us (the freshers) promised to refund all such money collected on your behalf. But up till now, nothing has been done.

We are not fighting your government, but it is said that "doing the right thing in the wrong way attracts attention of the public". Believe and accept that the attempted act is a "scam" and "cheating" in the eyes of "Aluta" and calls for serious apology and immediate refund.

We are waiting eagerly for an official public statement/briefing by your government on this and a quick action aimed at refunding the amount "erroneously" collected from us.

Yours Sincerely,
First year Students, FUTO.
