Surveying and Geoinformatics

Surveying and Geoinformatics

The Department of Surveying and geoinformatics at FUTO is a broad discipline consisting surveying and geoinformatics. Surveying is a geoscience discipline that concerns itself with the measurement of spatial shapes, positions and locations of the earth or portions thereof. Surveying extends its application to the study of earth fixed features and other environmental information necessary for map production, designing of engineering projects, geospatial planning, location and exploitation of natural resources, as well as geospatial administration. It is a multi-disciplinary subject, which serves as foundation discipline in earth based Engineering studies and practices, Environmental Studies, Geospatial Analysis and Planning.

Geoinformatics is the information technology based geospatial mathematical science for the collation, storage, processing and analysis of data, and the retrieval of geospatial information for use of Engineers, Scientists, administrators and other decision makers on geospatial matters, through the supporting technologies of Digital Surveying, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Cartography, and Computer science.

Our department seeks to expose students to the essential academics and practical training needed to make them grow into full and well-qualified professionals who are abreast with technological advancements in the field of Surveying and Geoinformatics and to inculcate in the students entrepreneurial skills geared towards self-employment.

The Courses are designed to produce Surveying and Geoinformatics experts with sound knowledge in the theory and practice of the key areas of the discipline including Land Surveying, Hydrographic Surveying, Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Cartography and Geospatial Information Systems. The students are also exposed to ensure adequate knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Environmental Law, needed by Surveyors. The Department focuses on providing students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in the specialized areas enumerated above.

Our vision is to establish a world class citadel of excellence in the study and research of Surveying and Geoinformatics
